How Installing a Touchless Faucet can Improve Your Living

It was an excellent meal, so much so that you resorted to using your hands as you savoured your food down to the last bite. You step into the lavatory but cannot open the faucet because your hands are covered with grease. Accessing running water is a pain; the oil stuck in your hands makes it difficult to turn the handle. It would have been more convenient if you no longer needed to turn on the faucet using the handle or lever.

Thinking About a Touchless Faucet

Well, if you haven’t you might start thinking of installing one. The touchless faucet works like magic! It is a hands-free, automatic or sensor faucet that operates without manual handles.

Touchless faucet technology is engineered with an infrared sensor which detects an object or motion within a certain proximity. Upon detection, a voltage is applied to the solenoid valve prompting it to open and release water.

This faucet is common in public restrooms, hotels, airports, bathrooms, and other commercial venues, andis popular in other establishments as well. So much so that the same touchless technology would make a great addition to your home.

Benefits of touchless faucets

If you are still not sold on the idea of installing touchless faucets in your home, here are a few reasons why you should consider it:

1. Water conservation

Touchless faucets help reduce water consumption, cutting usage dramatically compared to traditional faucets.

At a time when water scarcity is a global issue, we should be mindful of our daily water usage.Using a standard faucet, up to 2.2 gallons of water is used per minute while you tend to your needs, keeping the water flowing and unused. The nozzle used for touchless faucets allows less water to pass through, mixing air and water to give the same feel as though a larger quantity flows. Sensor taps also work on a timer of 10 to 15 seconds; when your hands move away, they will automatically turn off.

2. Germ Warfare

Germs can live on any home's surface, including traditional faucet handles. You can also come in contact with germs through fomites and the risk of spreading disease increases. Your standard faucets could be a breeding ground for these organisms and grime if not cleaned regularly.

You will always run the risk of cross-contamination using the traditional faucet. Before washing your hands, you will come into contact with the faucet handle, and the same colony of bacteria will come into contact with your hand if you turn off the faucet.

A touchless faucet lessens exposure to germs and bacteria that remain on your faucet handles and also lowers the risk of spreading diseases. It eliminates the transfer of grime and food residue back to your sink which can tamper your sink's finish.

3. Convenience

Irrespective of the age group, everyone can use touchless faucets with ease. All you need to do is wave to your sensor to activate and release water flow.

Water misuse and wastage is a primary concern for most homeowners, especially if you have kids at home. They have a tendency to be forgetful and to close the faucet handle completely. This leads to more problems for you. With touchless faucets, you do not need to worry; it turns off automatically when the sensor can no longer detect motion.

We may not realise this but gallons of water are wasted everyday as we wash our hands, face or brush our teeth.

Touchless faucets save you from a potential flood and incurring unnecessary addition to your water bill. It also requires less cleaning time because it rarely comes in contact with dirt, grease, or grime.

4. Fixed Temperature

Touchless faucets come with thermostatic mixing valves that combine hot and cold water to make the water the right temperature. Fixed temperatures save you from scalding hot water, which is often the case if you manually determine the temperature.

In addition, the integration of thermostatic mixing valves also prevents the growth of bacteria. If you use water heaters, you know that bacteria grow and thrive at a specific temperature. Commonly the temperature that can kill and prevent bacteria growth in the pipelines is at a scalding temperature, and Thermostatic mixers lower the temperature to a safer level.

5. Clean Less

One thing about traditional faucets is the need to use a handle to activate or turn off the water flow. Your dirt-covered hands will grab the handle to turn on the water flow, transferring the dirt to the handle. The same handle that you will use to turn off the faucet. The risk of cross-contamination is also greater.

Removing the need for contact also lessens the need to clean and disinfect your faucet handles. Not only is it convenient if you have your hands complete, but you can also do the cleaning or food preparation for cooking without the residue getting transferred into the faucet.

Automatic faucets that come as a single unit also mean no handles to clean or replace if broken.

6. Conserve Energy

Hands-free faucets can also be programmed to a specific temperature and water flow rate, so water and energy aren't wasted waiting for the temperature to warm up.

You do not get a wasteful blast of water when the faucet is turned on. Nor do you get burned with the scalding temperature. Hands-free faucets have a lower flow rate compared to traditional faucets.

Touchless faucet technology has offered ease and convenience to establishments and homeowners, and it has proven itself worthy of being installed in every home, particularly during emergencies. This is undoubtedly true during a health-related pandemic where the spread of disease could be through surface contact.
